The AUTUMN 2015 issue of QUILTS JAPAN is now on sale.

In her popular ‘World of Hand Work’ feature in this issue, Hikaru interviews French fabric figurative creator and textile designer Odile Bailloeul in Paris. Odile started out as a textile designer and then branched out to become an author of needlework and craft books. Recently, her mouse miniature figures in domestic or natural settings have been very popular. Her mouse kit and original fabrics including printed cotton and velvet are also available from her online shop.

The Autumn 2015 issue of Keitodama, one of the world’s leading knitting magazines, is now on sale. For this issue, Hikaru has written an article about the South African knitwear designer Laduma Ngxolo. Laduma started his own fashion brand MAXHOSA straight after his successful degree show at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth in South Africa, and he now lives in London. Hikaru saw his degree show and counts it as one of the few truly unforgettable student degree shows she has seen – probably the best since seeing Wakako KISHIMOTO’s (of ELEY KISHIMOTO) degree show. MAXHOSA uses very special yarn – South African merino wool mixed with South Africa mohair, produced by a local knitting mill. The textures of Laduma’s knitwear are very smooth and one cannot see any of the characteristic fluffiness of mohair at all. “The wool and mohair fuse together and after being worn, the mohair fibre slowly starts to appear on the surface,” he remarked. He creates beautiful geometric patterns, with garments which will age to take on the unique character of their wearer and their environment, which is quite amazing.

好評発売中　毛糸だま　2015年秋号　No.167にて野口光執筆の 『南アフリカから世界へ発信するモヘア　－ダイヤモンドファイバーを知り尽くす男 ラドゥマンココロさん』が掲載されています。 野口が2012年のラドゥマさんのネルソンマンデラ　メトロポリタン大学の卒業制作ファッションショーを見て以来、注目している男性デザイナー。「イギリスのブランド、イーリー　キシモトのデザイナー、岸本若子さんの卒業制作ファッションショーも忘れられませんが、ラドゥマさんの卒業制作のコレクションも同様に感動的なものでした」と野口は語ります。 ラドゥマさんの故郷、南アフリカ東ケープ州はモヘア毛糸の原毛の世界一の産地ということもあり、ラドゥマさんは学生時代から最高級モヘアをニットの作品にふんだんに使っていました。 主宰するファッションブランド MAXHOSAでは南アフリカ産のメリノウール80％、モヘア20％というオリジナルブレンドのさらりとした手触りの毛糸を使用しています。 「着てゆくうちに、ゆっくりとモヘアの繊維が起毛されてくる、そんな変化を楽しんでもらいたいです」と語るラドゥマさん。モヘアといえばフワフワの起毛テクスチュアを連想しますが、そんなモヘアの楽しみ方があるのか！と野口の驚きが伝わるページとなっています。

QUILTS JAPAN 2015 SUMMER issue is now on sale.
In this issue of Hikaru’s very popular “World of Hand Work” feature, Hikaru visited the shop and workshop of botanically-inspired leather goods designer, Susannah Hunter in Lambs Conduit Street in London.
Susannah and Hikaru both used to have workshop spaces in Cockpit Workshops which has been a creative incubator for new designers and makers who would like to start their own business since the 1980s.
Susannah’s shop / workshop are five minutes’ walk from Cockpit and I was really amazed to see how Lambs Conduit Street has changed over the last ten years. It has become very trendy and fashionable – no more charity shops! Anyhow, Susannah’s leather handbags are now well established and she has also done some interesting big projects like creating a garden space using her Botanical Leather applique technique for the Chelsea Flower Show in 2013 and 2014. All her products are made in her workshop below the shop by trained craftsmen who lay out, layer and then stitch all the tiny leather petals and leaves one by one.
The sewing machine stiches are like an artist drawing a fine line.
I have been very lucky to see Susannah’s efforts to maintain and enhance the world of high standard beautifully designed products over the last 15 years. I am looking forward to see the development of her work over the next 15 years.

スザンナさんは野口が1992年から2007年まで工房を構えていた、コックピット　アートという、新人デザイナークラフト作家を支援する工房団地にて部屋が隣同士という時期があったことがありました。スザンナさん
主宰のブランド　スザンナ　ハンターのイングリッシュガーデンを髣髴させる花鳥風月柄をレザーのアップリケで1つずつ作り上げているスタイルは、過去に何度も類似商品が巷に出たものの、手間隙がかかり、職人の技術だけではなく、センスも必要なので、コピー商品メーカーも太刀打ちがゆかないようです。
スザンナ ハンターのバッグを持っただけで、全身が、花束を抱きしめたかのような華かになるので、シンプルな白いシャツに着古しのデニムといったセレブの‘休日スタイルの定番バック’として支持されています。
記事では、2013年、14年にチェルシーフラワーショーにて、レザーアップリケで作り上げた庭のエピソードなども盛り込まれています。

The JULY SUMMER 2015 issue of the World leading knitting magazine, Keitodama is now on sale.
In this issue of  Keitodama World News, Hikaru writes about the textile artist  Celia Pym’s latest  Mending and Anatomy study with Dr Richard Wingate at the King’s Institute. This fascinating experimental study seeks similarities between medical operation exercises by medical students, and garment repairing by Celia at the King’s College Medical School.
